Job Summary:

The Certified Arborist Sales Representative is essential for ensuring the long-term health of trees. Their main responsibility is to visit properties, generate estimates, and provide expert care through honest assessments that align with clients' goals and industry standards while adhering to local environmental protection regulations. This role requires a combination of arboriculture knowledge, sales techniques, and effective communication skills.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain long-term client relationships by performing on-site property assessments of trees/landscapes and providing honest professional opinions or recommendations.
  • Manage sales within a defined territory by setting and meeting sales goals
  • Prepare and present proposals utilizing sales techniques
  • Ensure compliance with safety, transportation, and pesticide regulations

Required Skills/Abilities:

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • In-Depth Knowledge of Tree Care Practices: This includes knowledge of tree species, diseases, pests, pruning techniques, fertilization, and tree risk assessment.
  • Sales Experience: A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in sales, particularly in the tree care or landscaping industry, is preferred. Experience in customer service, relationship management, and sales techniques.
  • Experience in Fieldwork: Practical experience in arboriculture or related fields, such as working as a tree climber, ground crew member, or plant health care technician.
  • Ability to Conduct Site Assessments: Competence in evaluating landscapes, identifying tree health issues, and recommending appropriate care or treatment plans.
  • Familiarity with Industry Equipment: Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in arboriculture, including safety gear, climbing equipment, and tree care machinery.
  • Certification: Becoming an ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Certified Arborist is a key qualification. This involves passing the ISA Certified Arborist Exam, which requires knowledge and experience in arboriculture.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Quality Control: They are accountable for the quality of work performed on their sold jobs. While they may not directly supervise the crew on a day-to-day basis, they often play a critical role in conducting final inspections and ensuring that the work meets both client and company standards.
  • Training and Mentorship: Sharing knowledge about tree care practices, sales techniques, and customer service skills.
  • Client Communication: Communicating client needs and expectations to the field crews.
  • Problem Resolution: If issues arise during the execution of a project, the arborist sales representative may be responsible for resolving them, which can involve directing the crew to adjust or changes to the work plan.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. to shoulder height or more
  • Interested in working outdoors all year round
  • Site Assessments and Client Meetings: Involves walking around properties, inspecting trees, and assessing site conditions. May require climbing small ladders or bending to inspect roots or lower tree sections.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pruning of treetops and limbs, and safely remove at-risk or damaged trees and broken limbs from wires and roofs
  • Utilize tree climbing techniques and operate bucket trucks for trimming and removals near power lines
  • Enforce on-the-job safety practices to safeguard team members and the public
  • Responsible for daily production requirements of assigned crews.
  • Provides General Foreman or other designee with accurate payroll and revenue information of assigned crews.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the positive enforcement of the company's and customer's policies, procedures, and daily work requirements.
  • Observes, supports, and provides guidance to Crew Members in achieving maximum results in operational priorities.
  • Oversees all OSHA and ANSI Standards as well as all company safety and personnel policies.
  • Assists the General Foreman with equipment repairs and the scheduling of Preventive Maintenance.
  • Assists the General Foreman in the inspection of work, while also notating work order changes.
  • Ensures necessary permissions for crews to begin work.
  • Cooperate and communicate with our administrative team and local officials or departments to ensure a smooth flow of work.
  • Promptly and professionally handles any customer or homeowner complaints.
  • Communicates daily with General Foreman on crew activity, equipment problems, and safety or any other pertinent issues. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The Plant Health Care Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and vitality of trees and shrubs in various environments. Their primary responsibility is to provide expert care through treatments such as spraying, tree injections, and soil injections. This position requires a blend of arboriculture knowledge, physical stamina, and effective communication skills.

  • ISA Certified Arborist: The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification is highly recommended. It covers arboriculture knowledge, including tree biology, tree identification, and tree care practices.

  • Cleaning equipment after use and disposing of any collected scraps or waste properly
  • Completing minor repair work as needed to ensure equipment is always in optimal condition
  • Safely driving a company vehicle to multiple properties throughout the day
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Valid Driver’s License with reliable transportation.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred.
  • Willingness to obtain required training and certifications, including First Aid, CPR, and applicable licenses
  • Knowledge of site-prep equipment and machinery operation
  • Ability to perform minor repair work
  • Strong attention to detail and safety protocols
  • Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment by prioritizing tasks and asking for assistance when appropriate.
  • Experienced in the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Practical experience gained through on-the-job training is essential. This can be achieved through apprenticeships, internships, or entry-level positions where operators learn under the supervision of experienced professionals: at least two years of related experience is required.
  • Additional training in specific types of equipment (e.g., bulldozers, excavators) or advanced techniques (e.g., GPS for grading.)
  • Operators should have a fundamental understanding of mechanical systems to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.

Optional/Preferred:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: A high school diploma or GED is generally preferred but not required.
  • Experience in site preparation/ forestry or a degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred
  • Equipment Operator Certification: This certification or equivalent work experience is preferred. Examples include certifications from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) or other accredited training programs.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification: Useful for emergencies on-site.
  • Ongoing Learning: Commitment to continuous improvement through attending workshops, and additional certification courses, and staying updated with industry advancements and regulations.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct Supervision of Other Operators or Laborers

  • Task Coordination: In some cases, experienced operators might provide guidance or coordinate with less experienced operators or laborers to ensure tasks are performed correctly and efficiently.
  • Training and Mentorship: Occasionally, they might help train new operators or laborers, demonstrating proper techniques and safety procedures.

Indirect Influence on Team Operations

  • Example: Responsible for demonstrating best practices in equipment operation and site preparation, which can influence the standards and performance of the team.

Reporting and Communication with Supervisors

  • Feedback Provider: Provide feedback on operational challenges and suggest improvements, indirectly influencing the supervisor's decisions and team management strategies.
  • Reporting Accuracy: Accountable for providing accurate and timely reports to supervisors, which are essential for effective project management and decision-making.
  • Problem Identification: Responsible for identifying and communicating problems early, which helps in proactive resolution and maintaining project timelines.

Emergency Situations

  • Emergency Protocols: Ensure that emergency protocols are followed and provide guidance to less experienced workers during critical moments.
  • Post-Emergency Reporting: Responsible for documenting and reporting the incident and actions taken to the supervisor or safety officer.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. to shoulder height or more
  • Interest in working outdoors year-round in all weather conditions
  • Operating Heavy Machinery: Sitting for extended periods, using hand and foot controls, maintaining focus and precision, and occasionally adjusting machinery settings.
  • Hand/Power Tools and Maintenance: Lifting and carrying heavy tools and parts, using hand and power tools, climbing on and off machinery, bending, and kneeling.
  • Materials Handled: Lifting and moving debris, shoveling dirt, loading and unloading materials.
  • Site Preparation Activities (Outside Machinery): Walking around the site, marking out areas, and assisting with manual site preparation tasks.
